What Is the Universal® Split System?
The Universal® Split System is MRCOOL®’s latest innovation in central heating and cooling. This system is engineered to meet the real-world demands of today’s homeowners, installers, and property managers. It features a versatile variable-speed DC inverter-driven condenser that dynamically adjusts system output to maintain consistent comfort while reducing energy usage. Paired with a Universal® Air Handler, this system gives you powerful control over your indoor environment across a wide temperature range and a variety of configurations.
This highly innovative system can be installed with optional No-Vac® line sets pre-charged with R-454B refrigerant. This method considerably decreases the amount of time it takes to install HVAC in a home, reducing overall costs for homeowners and making more time for additional contractor opportunities.
Unlike most central systems, the Universal® is all-electric, meaning no combustion and no gas lines are required. This, alongside the compact size of the air handler and the slim side-discharge condenser, makes it easier to install in tight spaces or urban settings. Each of the five condensers is listed on Energy Star’s Most Efficient 2025, meaning you’re choosing low cost comfort that’s better for the environment.
For enhanced comfort and operation, the Universal® uses an upgraded M-shaped coil rather than an A-shaped coil. This feature essentially doubles the area of the coil, creating more space for heat exchange, which optimizes the function of the system as a whole. The all-aluminum coil is corrosion resistant and incredibly durable, meaning you can enjoy worry-free comfort year after year.

Five Condenser Sizes, Infinite Possibilities
The Universal® Split System is as efficient as it is adaptable, because it has five different sizes with multi-positional airflow capabilities to best suit your needs. Its ability to accommodate upflow, downflow, or horizontal configurations ensures that the Universal® system perfectly adapts to your home.
The air handler has an additional feature that makes the system all the more dynamic – it can be installed using 115V OR 208/230V. Most air handlers require 208/230V, which complicates the process of upgrading your system from a gas furnace to a heat pump, since most gas furnaces operate off of 115V. The new Universal® air handler allows a smooth transition from an old furnace to a new heat pump system, paving a simpler path towards nationwide electrification and greater home efficiency.
Extreme Comfort for Extreme Climates
Making the switch to electrical heating may be a bit daunting if you’re used to a gas furnace, but there’s no need to fear with the incredible climate performance of the Universal® series.
For example, the 3 ton Universal® condenser can continuously heat at a 100% output in temperatures as low as -13°F. It can even provide heating in temperatures down to -22°F, ensuring cozy comfort for most of the country. Optional heat kits are available for those that live in extreme climates that get incredibly cold for a few days out of the year.
The Universal® series is as great in the heat as it is in the cold. The 3 ton condenser is able to keep your home comfortable with 100% cooling output when it’s as high as 110°F outside, and can even provide cooling comfort if it gets up to 122°F.
